The Environment Deparment of Northern Ireland has published Annual Report 2010/11 on Municipal Waste Management Statistics. In 2010/11, the total amount of municipal waste arising, that is, all waste under the possession or control of a district council was 984,722 tonnes; a decrease of 1.9 percent on the 2009/10 total. Of this waste, 35.6 percent was sent for recycling including composting, an increase from 33.1 percent in 2009/10 and 8.9 percent in 2002. Magherafelt District Council had the highest municipal waste recycling rate at 51.8 percent.
